True Masters of their Craft

Man at Work

A few days ago, Alan Weiss posted on the extraordinary expertise (and scarcity) of true masters of their craft.

Inspired, I recall, by the tailor who repaired a tear in one of his cashmere jackets.

Eric of Cobblers Nest in London, UK is another such master. One guy in a treasure trove of a cobblers workshop - from all over the world, watches, satchels, briefcases, battered suitcases and more find their way to Eric for loving repair and restoration. He gets the jobs others can’t handle.

My green leather Knomo laptop bag has been out of action for 2 years. Zip and lining totally wrecked. No-one I approached (and I do mean no-one) would touch it.

Until Eric.

Took 2 weeks but I reclaimed it today, good as new. “Took a long time” he said “but worth it: it’s a lovely bag. Thank you for the job”.

And promptly gave me a discount.

Treasure your expertise; if you love what you do, chances are you’ll get seriously good at it…

One of the best investments in personal development I had at BP was to engage Simon Bucknall as a personal public speaking coach. He was phenomonal and key to my moving from being a very nervous public speaker to a strong and confident one.
