On Procrastination

On procrastination…

A friend of mine is a writer from Cleveland OH, USA.

Two of his novels have been Finalists in the prestigious National Book Award (which I understand is similar to The Booker Prize in the U.K.)

Each took him ten years to write.

Both were written on an old-school typewriter (no joke).

One relates the events of a single day.

James Joyce would have been proud.

In the summer of 2001, we took a road trip across the USA, from Boston as far as eastern Wyoming. Somewhere deep in the Mid-West, a few hours east of Cleveland, I remember my friend commenting:

“The hardest part of writing is not the writing. The hardest part is making the break from doing whatever else I’m doing… actually to sit down in front of my typewriter.”

The school is at the start of an ambitious and exciting journey. You have helped us set the standard for the remainder of the year and further ahead. I hope you will return to the school in the future and inspire subsequent cohorts of MPP students.
